FERS retirement eligibility

Check standard FERS retirement age and service conditions using your birth date, planned separation date and confirmed service. Compare your age with your minimum retirement age, or MRA.

Your scenario

Method and limitations

The tool derives completed age months at separation and compares the OPM birth-year MRA with standard age/service thresholds. Civilian service must be at least five years. Deposits, refunded contributions, special categories, disability, VERA and insurance eligibility are not assessed. Confirm every result with the agency benefits office.

Immediate deferred and postponed FERS retirement

An immediate retirement route depends on age and service at separation. Deferred retirement may apply when you leave before qualifying for an immediate benefit. Postponement concerns delaying commencement after qualifying for an MRA plus 10 route; it is not interchangeable with deferred retirement.

Worked example

Someone born on 15 June 1970 reaches age 60 on 15 June 2030. With 20 years of creditable service, including at least five civilian years, the standard age and service test for an unreduced immediate route is met.

Questions about this calculator

Does reaching MRA guarantee an unreduced pension?

No. Service length and the applicable retirement route matter. An MRA plus 10 benefit may have an age reduction.

Does this assess early retirement offers?

No. VERA, involuntary separation, disability and special category rules require separate assessment.
